Private Trail Running Skills Coaching Day

Improve your confidence and technique with a private trail-running skills day designed around you or your own group. For individuals and groups of up to six runners.

Build your own trail skills day

Every session is built around your current ability, goals and the terrain you want to become more confident on. Tell me what you want to work on — your weaknesses, the terrain you find difficult, the skills you want to develop — and the day is designed around that.

Suitable for road runners moving onto trails for the first time, through to experienced athletes preparing for technical fell, mountain and skyrunning races. No fixed programme, no mixed-ability public groups.

Sessions are available in Scotland, the Lake District, the Peak District, Eryri and other UK mountain areas by arrangement. I specialise in technical mountain terrain — steep ground, rocky ridges, loose descents and the terrain that many runners find hardest to approach confidently and efficiently.

For competitive runners, the session can focus on the technical weaknesses most likely to cost time during races.

Who this is for

  • Road runners stepping up to trails or fells
  • Trail runners preparing for their first mountain or skyrunning event
  • Experienced athletes wanting to close specific technical gaps
  • Groups of friends or club runners with a shared goal
  • Runners returning to technical terrain after a break and looking to rebuild confidence

What we can work on

Let me know your priorities. A day typically focuses on three or four areas in depth rather than covering everything superficially.

Climbing efficiently

When to run, when to hike, pacing steep gradients and maintaining momentum.

Technical descending

Foot placement, line choice, vision, braking, posture and confidence.

Moving over difficult terrain

Rock, mud, loose ground, steep slopes and uneven trails.

Using running poles

Technique, timing, deployment, stowing and deciding when poles are worthwhile.

Pacing and race preparation

Managing effort over varied terrain, equipment choices, fuelling and race-specific preparation.

Navigation and mountain awareness

Basic map and compass use, route planning, terrain interpretation and sensible decision-making. Navigation can be incorporated into the day, although these sessions are not a substitute for a full mountain-navigation course.

Why train with Hill Performance?

Sessions are led by Alex Hill, an experienced mountain, fell and skyrunning athlete and qualified Mountain Leader. Alex has competed at a high level in technical mountain races and combines practical terrain experience with performance coaching.
