Private Race Recce & Strategy Day
Plan the route. Know the terrain. Race with confidence. Private recce days for UK trail, fell, mountain ultra and skyrunning events — for individuals or groups of up to six.
A race recce built around you
There are no fixed public dates or mixed-ability groups. You choose the race, the preferred date and who attends. Sessions are available for individuals and for groups of up to six runners.
Your recce can cover the complete race route where practical, or focus on the sections most likely to affect your result: technical descents, major climbs, difficult navigation, exposed terrain, or the parts of the course that worry you most.
Throughout the day we work on route knowledge, race pacing, terrain confidence and race-day strategy — shaped around your experience, your goals and what you actually want to get from the day.
Days are available in Scotland, the Lake District, the Peak District, Eryri and other UK mountain areas by arrangement.
Races and routes covered
Recces can be arranged for trail, fell, skyrunning and mountain-ultra events throughout the UK. This may include:
- UK Skyrunning events
- Lakeland 50 and Lakeland 100
- Spine Race and Spine Challenger routes
- Northern Traverse
- Cape Wrath Ultra
- British and regional fell races
- Other technical trail and mountain races
Not sure if your race is covered? Get in touch and we’ll work it out together.
What your recce can cover
Every day is shaped around you. We can cover the whole route or target the sections where it matters most.
- Key climbs, descents and technical sections — understand how each section is likely to feel and influence your decisions on race day
- Route knowledge and navigation — checkpoints, bail-outs, line choices and landmarks
- Race pacing and effort management — how to read the terrain and manage your energy across the day
- Confidence on steep or exposed terrain — building certainty before race day
- Equipment and mandatory kit — what works on this specific route and in this terrain
- Fuelling and hydration planning — checkpoints, carry requirements, race-day nutrition
- Use of poles — technique, when to deploy them, transitions
- Race-day logistics and strategy — start strategy, cut-offs, weather contingencies and how to manage the closing stages of the race
Why train with Hill Performance?
Sessions are led by Alex Hill, an experienced mountain, fell and skyrunning athlete and qualified Mountain Leader. Alex has competed at a high level in technical mountain races and combines practical terrain experience with performance coaching.
